The Kauer Banshee Deluxe retains the same neck thru construction that makes the Banshee so unique, but adds a maple top for a distinct sonic flavor. Measuring ¼” thick in the middle and 1/8” on the wings, it imparts a bite and tightness not heard in the standard Banshee and pairs especially well with humbucking pickups. Nonetheless, the body maintains the thin dimensions, comfortable contours and lively response of its namesake. If this isn’t exactly the Banshee you are looking for, feel free to contact us for a custom order to spec one out exactly to your liking!
What Do We Think?
Don’t let the purple finish fool you. This guitar was built for rock ‘n’ roll. You get the dry bark of the Spanish Mahogany body, the snap and bite of the Maple cap, and the clarity and beautiful vocal response of the Wolfetone KauerBuckers. Throw some gain on it and you’ll instantly be dishing out the Les Paul-like tones of your favorite Slash riffs.
And yet, the guitar does excel equally at clean tones. There is a haunting beauty that builds on a foundation equal parts balance and simplicity. No particular frequency is “in the way”. The bottom end is warm and woody. The midrange has that gorgeous, open vowel. And the top end is sweet but round.
For those familiar with the Wolfetone lineup, the Kauerbucker bridge pickup is wound slightly hotter than the Legend and the neck pickup is slightly underwound to keep the mids nice and open in the mahogany body. They utilize fully-charged Alnico II magnets for a tone that is vintage at heart but with just the right touch of heat. The bridge pickup can really sizzle with the gain cranked but maintains a classic feel and composure all the way.
And there’s no shame in calling out the beauty of the metal flake finish! Doug honestly does some of the best sparkle finishes in the industry. His custom mix of metallic flake size makes the finish absolutely dance under the light.
How Does It Play?
You know what else is rock ‘n’ roll about this instrument? The neck profile! This one is reminiscent of a ’58 Les Paul… starting out at .88” at the first fret and reaching 1.01” at the 12th. Fair to say it’s chunky, but perfectly so. The string action measures just 4/64” on the low E at the 12th fret and nearly down to 3/64” on the high E without buzz. The frets are PLEK’d and wonderfully dressed to boot.
