Every guitarist needs one single-coil guitar that delivers the perfect amount of bite and twang to cut through the mix—enter the Shabat Lion Standard. With an array of T-style pickups from Lollar to choose from and a feather-light body (ash, alder or pine) fitted with either a Gotoh three-saddle or modern six-saddle bridge, the Lion Standard offers incredible punch, sustain and resonance.
What Do We Think?
This “blackguard” is sure to please. The Lollar Special T in the neck position has wonderful spank and clarity, but is thick and gutsy throughout the full EQ sweep at the same time. It really sings, even through a clean amp. The 1-piece Swamp Ash body is both lively and resonant, giving every note played an effortless sustain.
The bridge position has a beautiful midrange. It has perhaps a little more meat on the bone than a pure vintage wind, and to welcome effect. It sounds woody more than brassy. The natural depth, scoop and presence of the Swamp Ash sit just right with this pickup, keeping the mids both vibrant and controlled.
The middle position is deep and bell-like. Some middle positions lack for richness in their delivery of chime and sparkle. This middle position delivers on all fronts. There is a slight dip in the midrange as the two pickups together filter out some mid frequencies, but this clear midrange is supported by the deep, punchy bottom end.
A few player-friendly nuances worth pointing out… The body edges are rounded more than on a traditional T-style, a simple touch but one that is immediately perceived and appreciated. The three-way selector switch is situated at a slight angle to make throwing back to the bridge position all that much easier. This guitar is a phenomenal take on a classic, with a few improvements thrown in.
How Does It Play?
The neck feels like a 50’s vintage-inspired Fender U, measuring 0.89” at the first fret and squeaking in a hair under 1.00” at the 12th. Very comfortable and befitting of the build. The string action hovers right around 4/64” at the 12th, giving you room to dig into your string bends yet the ease to play fast and clean as well. The fretwork and nut slots are impeccable.
