What Do We Think?
Looking for an American-influenced amp that is ready to pair with your cabinet or load box of choice? This could be just your ticket. Even through a 1x12” it is definitely a gigging volume amp. Plug into a 2x12” loaded with Vintage 30’s and this amp will simultaneously sizzle and roar. Just like its combo sibling, it imparts beautiful harmonic content to every note when you push it towards noon. The amp is nice and hi-fi with the volume dialed back, allowing the nuances of any guitar to shine through. With the volume dialed up, you’re thrown right into the 60’s with overdriven tones reminiscent of Cream and early Zeppelin.
The two modes of tremolo/vibrato are pleasantly distinct from each other. The AM mode is a standard tremolo with a clean, powerful pulse at higher intensity and a very smooth or subtle effect at lower intensity. The FM mode is a pitch shifting varistor vibrato that takes on a psychedelic, otherworldly chorus component when maxed out. We haven’t heard any other amp that does a vibrato like this one, and we love it! Plug in a second cab (an additional speaker jack is available on the underside of the chassis) and push the intensity up between 3 and 5 o’clock for a completely magical, 3-dimensional experience.
In both modes, the range of the effect is fantastic. The speed setting is visible via the LED on the included footswitch to help you dial in the right time between songs when you do not have the liberty of hearing the amp. The speed can even be controlled via an expression pedal.
The Reverb is equally dialed in. It has a natural pre-delay that keeps it from over-smearing the initial note. At full intensity it has a cavernous quality but maintains the pick strike in a very effective manner, allowing you to utilize the full sweep of the effect. More mild settings sit just right in a mix, and the reverb is footswitchable as well.
The open-back 1x12” cabinet has a patently vintage, “broken in” flavor but without the sag of a worn out speaker. The low end is warm but not boomy. The top end is smooth and silky, extending just high enough to ensure good articulation but rolled off before things can get harsh. The midrange is neutral at lower volumes and gets more colored the harder you push the speaker. Really work it and you will be rewarded with smooth speaker breakup and a bottom that stays punchy and controlled. Whether used as an extension speaker to your combo or a lone cabinet for your head, this speaker is ready to add serious tone and character to your rig. Impressively, it only weighs 25lb.
