Mario Martin guitars are hand built in Murfreesboro, TN just 40 minutes down the road from us! Undertaking the entire build process from cutting the body blank to spraying the final touch of nitro, Mario Martin achieves a level of guitar making well beyond partscaster builders who may look alike on the surface. These guys maintain one of the best collections of tonewoods around, and every neck/body/pickup combination is chosen carefully to amplify the personality of the guitar as a whole. Whether you crave an S-style guitar straight out of 1958 or the unique Tele-Strat mashup that is the Honcho, we are confident you’ll find what you’re looking for in a Mario Martin.
What Does Josh Think?
This is one punchy Strat! The alder body is lightweight, snappy and resonant, but has plenty of body underneath. The Porter 1960’s Strat pickups sound big and clear on your cleans, bold and powerful on your drives and fuzzes. The neck position is thick with a nice touch of midrange honk. The combined positions have plenty of quack and a slightly rolled-off top end.
The bridge pickup is unabashedly single coil. It’s super tight and snappy on the bottom, crisp and clear thru the mids, sweet and brilliant on top. All of the pickups respond really nicely to the tone knobs and of course, the bridge is wired to the second tone knob so nobody gets left out. Rolling back the tone on any of the pickup positions tailors the broad EQ output of the pickups and softens the touch of the amp under your fingertips.
It took me a minute to adapt to the immediacy and wallop of these pickups. But once I did, it was a ride I didn’t want to get off! The maple fretboard gives you a glorious sounding board to hear and feel every bump or wiggle in the road. How you drive it is up to you!
How Does It Play?
This S-Style features Mario’s Chunky C+ neck profile. We’re talking just a touch chunky, not overwhelming. Possibly our favorite Mario profile option here at the shop. The string action measures under 5/65” on the low E at the 12th fret and under 4/64” on the high E, without buzz. The 6125 fretwire is slightly lower than the 6105 “narrow tall” fret profile and feels very smooth under the hands when sliding up and down the neck.
