What Do We Think?
The Spanky Jr. sounds phenomenal both “in the room” and mic’d. Between the 2 inputs and the 3-band EQ, you have a lot of control over the character of the amp. The tube driven reverb is lush with a beautiful bloom and temperate decay. Think a cross between “hall” and “spring” if you were choosing presets on a DAW plugin. It is the perfect tonal gatekeeper at the end of your signal chain.
To our ears, the real magic lies in the mid knob. Rolling it back delivers clean and “open” tones. Pair this with a bump in the low EQ for some Blackface-on-the-go at low volumes. Switch from input 1 to input 2 for assistance dialing in an especially warm and mellow voice, a surprising feat for a 1x10 combo.
Returning the mid knob to noon conjures Bassman-like tones. A Tele sounds tight in the bass, tasteful through the mids and smooth in the highs. With this flat EQ, breakup starts around 11 to noon. Humbuckers will drive the amp earlier on the volume knob exactly as expected, and sound wonderfully thick and creamy while doing so.
Pushing the mid control to 3 brings you into Tweed territory and saturates the amp more quickly regardless of pickup type. Rather than pinpointing an exact frequency, the mid control really feels like a texture waiting to be “seasoned to taste”. Get creative in its interaction with the other tone controls. Raising the treble to match the mids, while rolling back the bass, even gives you some AC15-inspired tones on the upper reaches of the fretboard.
We mentioned mic’ing earlier… this is an incredible amp for venues that constantly knock you for your stage volume. While you shouldn’t expect to keep up with a drummer without reinforcement, nothing about this amp sounds small when mic’d and heard back through in-ears. Neither does it require heavy EQ’ing at the board. We have put the Spanky Jr. through its paces in real-life environments and heartily approve.
This Spanky Jr. 6VEL is decked out in custom Fawn covering and Brown Diamond grill.
