Our Lion Deluxe model is all about options and big, heavy tone. Select alder, mahogany, or korina as your body wood, and load it with a pair of Lollar P-90s, JM-style pickups, or humbuckers—the choice is yours. The Lion Deluxe comes complete with a nice tummy cut for comfort, optional binding, and separate volume and tone controls for each pickup for the ultimate in tonal control.
What Do We Think?
We immediately hear the woody warmth of the mahogany body, balanced by the open-flavored character of the Lollar El Rayo humbuckers. These pickups have less midrange hump than your traditional humbuckers and a little boost in the top end, but retain the richness of their forebearers.
The neck position has a nice chirp on top, underpinned by a low end that is unapologetically warm and deep. Even by humbucker standards, this pickup is very big and punchy. The midrange cuts some fluff and exudes more clarity, providing a vast tonal landscape for everything from chords to wide intervals to single note leads.
The bridge pickup has a crisp bite and a sweet sizzle. It is impressively compliant to the tone knob, from 10 all the way down to zero. Rolling back to 7 or 8 brings you PAF-styled humbucking tones with that inherent emphasis on the midrange. Rolling back further settles into a nice juicy honk. Perhaps most surprising is the tone knob at zero… the sounds here are “cocked wah” with a touch of fuzz. Exceedingly fun and a genuinely valuable tool in the bag.
Some little details we really love about this guitar… It features a traditional skunk stripe and heel adjust truss rod, but utilizes a spoke wheel (think EVH or Ernie Ball) so that you never need to remove the neck. The body edges are rounded over more gently than a traditional T-style, a detail you’ll note and appreciate the moment you swing your arm over it. Even the pickguard edges are nicely rounded, and Avi is using nice thick stock that bears a distinctly vintage look.
How Does It Play?
The neck is a good medium C made of quartersawn hard maple and sanded down perfectly smooth on the back. The setup work coming out of Avi’s shop is impeccable. The string action measures just 4/64” on the low E at the 12th fret and even lower on the high E without a hint of buzz. The fret ends are smooth and nicely rounded. The nut slots are cut to perfection as on all of Avi’s guitars, truly some of the best we’ve seen, allowing string bends to return to “zero” every time.
