Mario Martin guitars are hand built in Murfreesboro, TN just 40 minutes down the road from us! Undertaking the entire build process from cutting the body blank to spraying the final touch of nitro, Mario Martin achieves a level of guitar making well beyond partscaster builders who may look alike on the surface. These guys maintain one of the best collections of tonewoods around, and every neck/body/pickup combination is chosen carefully to amplify the personality of the guitar as a whole. Whether you crave an S-style guitar straight out of 1958 or the unique Tele-Strat mashup that is the Honcho, we are confident you’ll find what you’re looking for in a Mario Martin.
What Do We Think?
This is just a stellar set of specs all around. But at the end of the day, it’s the sum of the parts that matters. And it all comes together beautifully. The Mojo UK Lipstick pickup in the neck is bold but sweet. 42 gauge wire and alnico 6 magnets (same as the old Danelectro lipsticks) allow for a clear midrange, warm bottom and chimey articulation. “Big” would describe it better than “bright.”
The TV Jones Classic Filter’Tron in the bridge position sounds a bit like a Tele with some compression dialed in, alongside a touch of the quack from a Strat. It serves up delicious clean tones. But it can just as easily dish out some classic rock with a bite. The tone knob has an extremely usable throw. Roll it back to about 40% to bring in PAF-inspired tones. Speaking of fiddling with knobs, both pickups remain clear and nuanced when playing with the volume knob to work the front end of your amp right from the guitar.
This guitar is no slouch in the visual department either. The Swamp Ash body is double bound and features a Bullion Gold light relic finish. The AAAA Birdseye Maple neck is roasted, finished in clear gloss, and quite a sight to behold.
How Does It Play?
This guitar plays super fast and low. Specifically, the string action at the 12th fret is a hair over 4/64” on the low E and 3/64” on the high E. That’s without any buzz. The neck profile is Mario’s “Chunky C,” which is not so chunky if we may chime in with personal opinion. It’s probably our favorite of all the Mario neck options, supportive but not bulky.
