Mario Martin guitars are hand built in Murfreesboro, TN just 40 minutes down the road from us! Undertaking the entire build process from cutting the body blank to spraying the final touch of nitro, Mario Martin achieves a level of guitar making well beyond partscaster builders who may look alike on the surface. These guys maintain one of the best collections of tonewoods around, and every neck/body/pickup combination is chosen carefully to amplify the personality of the guitar as a whole. Whether you crave an S-style guitar straight out of 1958 or the unique Tele-Strat mashup that is the Honcho, we are confident you’ll find what you’re looking for in a Mario Martin.
What Do We Think?
Don’t let the beauty of this lightweight double-bound Paulownia T-Style fool you… there’s brawn to be found in this guitar too. The Lollar Specials sit perfectly to give you a warm low end, percussive midrange and chime-y highs. The bridge pickup is dry and clear, focusing on the fundamentals as much as the overtones. It is punchy more than strident. It will get the job done for some clean chicken pickin’, but it really shines when turning the amp up past breakup. Big Pete Townsend chords sounds absolutely glorious.
The middle position doubles down on the spank and chime but keeps the warm low end. This position is a bit scooped in the EQ curve, giving it gorgeous clarity and a sweetened top end. The neck position can be nice and open as well, especially played back close to the bridge. The midrange thickens as you move your picking hand up toward the neck, accentuating a throaty vowel that encourages bluesy bends and slower, vocal-inspired melodies.
The 4-way switch gives you an additional combined pickup flavor. With the selector switch thrown all the way forward, you get the pickups wired in series instead of the usual parallel configuration. This essentially gives you a humbucker with thick, lush midrange and the power to push the amp into breakup a little quicker. This position gives you a wonderful place to go for smooth higher gain tones.
How Does It Play?
The C neck measures 0.830” at the first fret and 0.930” at the twelfth. It feels rather “Oval C” on the lower frets and more “round C” on the upper frets. Very cool. The neck sets up perfectly for string action hovering right around 4/64” at the 12th fret. The back of the neck has the gloss knocked down slightly, just enough to give you a smoother and more satin-like feel.
