What Do We Think?

Whether you plan on using the wiggle stick or not, the Mastery Vibrato adds a nice dimension of sparkle and note definition to the tone emanating from the pair of Lollar Imperial pickups. Notes are percussive and sweet. Individual chord tones can be heard even among dense chord voicings. And if you are a die-hard Jazzmaster vibrato user, you’ll definitely appreciate the smoothness of the Mastery along with the pop-in tremolo arm. It rotates out of the way easily but stays securely in the tremolo. The Mastery bridge unit is finely shaped to allow the strings to slide freely back to pitch after use.

The tone-shaping options are abundant on this guitar. The Lollar Imperial in the neck position has a rich, thick bottom, so there’s no loss for warmth in this instrument. It can get thick and bluesy. Yet there’s an undeniable clarity and shimmer that justifies adding plenty of double stops and leaving your open notes ringing.

The middle position sounds drop-dead gorgeous for spacious chord strums and arpeggio shapes. Sweeten it with just a touch of reverb and you really don’t need anything else. But it will also feed a delay pedal with the purity and precision required to keep your dotted eighth patterns nice and articulate.

The bridge position has a touch of twang, highlighting the tonal contributions from the stainless steel string and body plate of the vibrato. Combine that with the sweet midrange of the Imperial humbucker, and you have a bridge pickup position that is exceptionally energetic.

Each pickup can be individually coil split as well, opening up even more tones. Jangly and surfy sounds are on tap in all three pickup positions. Running the neck in coil split mode gives you a great juxtaposition to the bridge in humbucking mode. The volume stays nicely balanced, requiring nothing more than a flip of the toggle switch to go from the extra single-coil sweetness in the neck to a more driving tone in the bridge.

How Does It Play?

This guitar sets up superbly low without any fretbuzz. The string action measures 4/64” on the low E at the 12^th fret and 3/64” on the high E, to be exact. The neck features some nice shoulder and a medium C depth. It starts out almost as an oval C and rounds out nicely as you climb the neck. And we will reiterate here that the Mastery Vibrato is one of the finest Jazzmaster-style vibratos you will find. The tuning on the guitar is incredibly stable.
