The Alt de Facto series is Fano’s top-of-the-line custom series. These are handbuilt in the USA by one luthier from start to finish so that every instrument tells a unique and cohesive story. Nitrocellulose lacquer body and neck of course. We are an Alt de Facto dealer, so if this isn’t exactly the guitar you are looking for, let us know what you want and we’ll get you the best price on your custom build.
What Do We Think?
The Lollar El Rayos in this guitar provide the articulation of a single coil with the roundness of a humbucker. Clean tones are open through the midrange and chimey on top, with plenty of body beneath that stays tight and defined. The pickups handle gain in much the usual creamy fashion of other humbuckers, but with more nuance in the midrange. They have a rich but moderate output that doesn’t hit the front end of your pedals too hard, leaving them the headroom to work their magic with clarity.
And then you have coil splits! Being a low resistance pickup, the coil splits do have a notable volume drop when used alone. But used in conjunction with the opposite pickup left in full humbucking mode, the tones are fantastic. Splitting the bridge and leaving the neck humbucking gives you tones reminiscent of the middle position on a Telecaster, sugary sweet and with a nice pop at the same time. Splitting the neck while leaving the bridge humbucking has a nice compression and subtle out-of-phase honk.
We find the tone control to be especially friendly with the El Rayos. Dialing back just a little will roll off the top end for PAF-styled tones, while rolling it back further delivers unique “cocked wah” or filtered tones.
When it comes to cosmetics, this guitar really delivers as well. The custom Charcoal Frost finish, block neck inlays, and Bigsby with matching clean nickel hardware are a knockout combination. It’s safe to say this is a one-of-a-kind instrument all around.
How Does It Play?
Fano’s early ‘60s C neck is a nice medium profile with good shoulder and gentle taper from the nut to the heel. The string action on this guitar measures a superbly low 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret and 3/64” on the high E, without any buzz. The frets are dressed to perfection.
