What Do We Think?
This guitar has a magical “focus” and fullness thanks to the combination of Lollar El Rayo pickups in an alder body, roasted maple neck and rosewood fretboard. Visually, it has an understated beauty and elegance. Tonally, it delivers a huge arsenal of strengths and options.
As a rule, the low resistance and larger pickup wire of the Lollar El Rayos delivers tones that are clear and open through the midrange and chimey on top. They also have nice body on bottom, but stay clear and defined. This is absolutely true of the pickups in this guitar, but with the slightly moderating influence of the roasted maple neck which tends to bring more punch to the midrange and a slight taper to the top end. That makes this guitar incredibly balanced, with a natural EQ that suits clean and dirty tones with equal ease.
Despite all their beauty and nuance, the El Rayos deliver some fantastic punch in the bridge position of this guitar. Even as you turn up the gain, it maintains string-to-string definition and lets you distinguish every note of the chord. The bridge pickup can roar for solos too, and you can dial back the “chirp” with the tone knob if you want that creamy PAF type of tone.
The neck position is warm and dynamic. Note attack is clean and defined. It has more spank than a traditional neck humbucker, yet the tonal landscape is expansive from top to bottom. The middle position is even cleaner, with a slight scoop or mildly phasey tone in the midrange that conjures the sounds of Filter’Tron pickups. The guitar also features an individual coil-split for each pickup, giving you a huge number of tonal variations.
How Does It Play?
This guitar sets up very low, with the string action measuring nearly down to 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret and nearly down to 3/64” on the high E string. That’s without any buzz. The neck is straight and has an extra measure of stability thanks to the roasted maple. The profile is a moderate C inspired by an early ‘60s Fender shape, not quite an oval C but with ample shoulder to support the hand while maintaining an easy profile right up to the body joint. The contoured neck heel is a nice touch as well.
