The Alt de Facto series is Fano’s top-of-the-line custom series. These are handbuilt in the USA by one luthier from start to finish so that every instrument tells a unique and cohesive story. Nitrocellulose lacquer body and neck of course. We are an Alt de Facto dealer, so if this isn’t exactly the guitar you are looking for, let us know what you want and we’ll get you the best price on your custom build.
What Do We Think?
First of all, this is a gorgeous instrument. As far as we’re aware, it is the first open pore finish done on a Fano guitar and we’re stoked with how it turned out. It’s a sleek satin black, set off smartly by some light finish distressing and the texture of the open grain in the swamp ash body. The nickel hardware really pops, all the more for being Bigsby-equipped.
Tonally, this guitar stands apart as well. We’re a big fan of Lollar Imperials in just about any guitar. In this particular instrument, the swamp ash body and the Bigsby tremolo lend a bit of extra clarity to the midrange and chime to the high end. You get the full warmth of the humbucker, but with a bit more “air” and articulation than you might find in your other humbucker guitars.
In addition to the 3-way switch, you have push/pull pots on both the volume and tone controls to give you independent coil splits for each pickup. Coil splitting both pickups together takes you to Strat-like territory, less quack than your positions 2 or 4 but with the nice pop and attack you get from a set of traditional single coils. The bridge pickup split even delivers the metallic bite of a Tele. To really mix things up, try the middle position with one pickup split and the other in humbucking mode to blend both tonal profiles into one.
How Does It Play?
This guitar has a beautiful early '60s-inspired C profile, moderately slim but with nice shoulders to support the hand for the duration of the gig. The neck sets up straight and the action hovers at a low 4/64” at the 12th fret without any buzz.
