What Do We Think?
Obviously, this guitar will make you do a double-take just on appearance alone. Doug is a master of mixing flake sizes for his metallic flake finishes, and this makes them dance under the light more than any other metallic finishes we’ve seen. They never fail to stun.
But getting down to tone, wow. This is where love at first sight turns into something more. I absolutely love a neck pickup position that gives me a nice open tone and “cleans up” an amp instead of turning it to mud. The Lollar Regal in the neck position of this guitar absolutely does that. That’s not to say it lacks warmth or character. But it balances a sweet low end with a slightly hollowed out midrange and a beautiful chirp in the highs.
The middle position has an immediacy to the attack and a slight smiley face to the EQ that is reminiscent of playing a great dreadnought acoustic. I realize that may be a strange point of comparison for a humbucker-equipped electric instrument. But the acoustic properties of the swamp ash body really come to life here, exuding a tight bottom end and a nice shimmering resonance on top.
The bridge position brings a nice bark into the tonal repertoire of the guitar. It adds some extra meat in your middle register when compared to the other positions. It also has just enough of a bump in output to push the amp a bit harder. Dial in your amp where you have some nice grit on the bridge pickup and then throw the pickup selector forward to the neck position to immediately clean up the dirt and open up the midrange at the same time.
Lastly, the Descendant Vibrato is an engineering masterpiece. It gives you an improved break angle at the bridge which significantly improves the desired resonance of the instrument and reduces the unwanted string noise that typically occurs behind the bridge with a JM-style vibrato. It has a very smooth action and returns to zero incredibly well. Both the tension of the vibrato itself and the tension of the arm in the socket can be adjusted to get the feel just where you want it.
How Does It Play?
The Roasted Maple neck on this one is a medium C with healthy shoulders. Plek’d to perfection, the frets are level and beautifully polished. The neck sets up very nicely and gives you low string action of 4/64” (low E string) and 3/64” (high E) without a buzz.
