Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. Models can be built with either a maple or rosewood fretboard to meet the needs of a variety of players. If this isn’t the exact Fano you are looking for, contact us to spec one out precisely to your liking!
What Do We Think?
The MG6 model provides a full 25.5” scale length take on the classic Mustang, and one that we truly enjoy. The “vintage” style 6-screw Gotoh tremolo features steel saddles and gives the guitar the perfect classic vibe, without the instability of the old Mustang trems. The strings move freely back to pitch every time and tuning stays spot on!
The Fano P-90 pickups are punchy and juicy. The’ve got enough output to push your amp into sweet compression, but they have a soft side too. What you put in is what you get out. The neck position is warm with generous body, a nuanced middle register and a round top end. The middle position embodies the crispness of a Strat without the phasey characteristic, and with some extra balls down bottom.
The bridge position has the trademark P-90 snarl, but also responds beautifully to the tone knob. Backing off to 7 or so shifts the midrange vowel south a bit, taking on more of the smooth and rounded tone of a humbucker. This setting sounds phenomenal in front of a gained-up amp, tailoring the top end just right. The neck pickup takes nicely to the tone knob as well, picking up a subtle cocked wah quality in the process. Don’t be afraid to work the knobs as an extension of the pickups!
While it may be difficult to catch in the photos on a small screen, we want to point out that the Sonic Blue NOS (“new old stock”) finish sports some beautiful finish checking. Just like a vintage ‘60s instrument put away in the case and not pulled out of the closet until today!
How Does It Play?
These guitars come in playing great right from Fano. The frets are beautifully dressed and polished. We have it set up with action nearly down to 4/64” on the low E at the 12th fret and under 4/64” on the high E, without any buzz. The early 60’s-inspired C profile is temperately slim, but with a nice amount of shoulder to support the hand and thwart fatigue. We do a thorough check and make the occasional truss rod, nut or saddle tweak to make sure the guitar plays exactly to our liking.
