Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. Models can be built with either a maple or rosewood fretboard to meet the needs of a variety of players. What Do We Think?
Lollar Imperials are some of the most versatile pickups around, and some of our personal favorites as well. Add coil-splitting and a super-smooth Gotoh 510T tremolo, and you’ve got one guitar that’s poised to do it all.
The neck position is warm and fat but retains nice articulation in the midrange. It is a pickup that responds well to your pick attack and to the volume knob on the guitar. Lighter attack or less output hitting the front of your amp will produce a more open and air midrange, while a heavy attack and full throttle and full throttle on the volume knob will give you round, creamy tones in front of an overdriven amp.
The middle position has plenty of sparkle on top with a generously punchy, supportive bottom end. The bridge pickup has “bark” but nuance as well. It naturally possesses a nicely-tailored top end, but you can also work the tone knob if you find yourself even a little more rolled off. This is a pickup that sounds equally strong on clean tones and overdrives alike.
Perhaps the “sleeper” positions on this guitar are its coil splits. The bridge pickup coil split is surprisingly full and juicy. Think a fatter Strat bridge position that sounds fantastic all on its own. And these are individual coil splits, so you can mix or match the settings on each pickup. Push/pull volume knob for neck split, tone knob for bridge split. Some of the most fantastic tones are the combination of one pickup split and the other in full humbucking mode. The result sounds like having the perfect compressor dialed in for your single-coil guitar.
How Does It Play?
The neck profile is a moderate “early 60’s” C that leaves enough on the shoulder to support the hand and prevent fatigue, while affording a thin enough profile for blazing fretwork. Speaking of fretwork, Fano does an impeccable job dressing and polishing their frets and this one is no exception. The string action sets up very easily at just 4/64” on the low E at the 12th fret, and splits the difference between 3/64” and 4/64” on the high E. That’s without any fret buzz. The body is nicely contoured front and back to round out a superbly-comfortable playing experience.
