Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. Models can be built with either a maple or rosewood fretboard to meet the needs of a variety of players. If this isn’t the exact Fano you are looking for, contact us to spec one out precisely to your liking!
What Do We Think?
We love it. This is the first build we have spec’d with this particular pickup combination and it does exactly what we had hoped! Think of it as a more balanced version of a Tele equipped with a humbucker in the neck. The Lollar P-90 in the bridge position balances the output of the neck position wonderfully. For tonal reference, think more rockabilly than country on clean amp. Then turn up the gain and revel in the extra meat and midrange snarl that it provides over a single coil pickup.
The Lollar Imperial in the neck tracks with your pick attack to go from warm and buttery straight to a nice smokey grind. We consistently find the Imperial to be an ideally-balanced pickup in solid body guitars. It shows real nuance and class, yet has enough power to pick up and go. Not enough options at your fingertips? Try the push/pull on the tone knob. This coil splits the humbucker for tones more Tele than Strat, delivering a great steely quality with nice pop and just a touch of twang.
The middle position with the coil split neck hails The Doobie Brothers’ “Listen to the Music” if it was played on an electric, with glorious spank and clarity. And with the humbucker dropped back into full humbucking mode, you’ll find that a light touch brings out unusually lush upper harmonics thanks to the P-90’s extended range. A heavier hand will produce a more compressed feel with a nice steamy sizzle on top to make sure it sits just right.
How Does It Play?
This beauty sets up with the string action measuring just 4/64” at the 12th fret on the low E and a hair over 3/64” on the high E, all without buzz. The frets are beautifully dressed and polished. The early 60’s-inspired C profile is temperately slim, but with a nice amount of shoulder to support the hand and thwart fatigue. The back of the neck is silky smooth, sanded down and treated with Tung Oil to feel immediately worn in.
