Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. Models can be built with either a maple or rosewood fretboard to meet the needs of a variety of players. If this isn’t the exact Fano you are looking for, contact us to spec one out precisely to your liking!
What Do We Think?
Lollar Firebird pickups are some of our favorite tricks in the toolbox. They have the low end power and punch of a full humbucker, the midrange transparency of a single-coil, and a top end that is smooth yet perfectly enunciated. With the tone all the way up, the bridge pickup can sound like the biggest, fattest Telecaster you’ve never played, or it can melt into some serious midrange heat that will get your amp smoking with the tone rolled back and the gain dialed up.
The neck is articulate, with a big and warm bottom end that stays tight with a little headroom in your amp, and plenty of bite in the midrange. It responds like a more well-mannered and polished version of a neck position single coil, and with loads of output. The middle position is spanky and sounds great with a clean amp for anything from fingerpicking to funky strumming, and sounds gorgeous through lush delays and reverbs as well.
Between the Firebird pickups and a Gotoh 510T bridge, this guitar is exceptionally versatile and able to cross the lines between notable traditional builds. Nonetheless, it really delivers a tone is all its own and will take you places other guitars haven’t.
How Does It Play?
The neck profile is a moderate “early 60’s” C that leaves enough on the shoulder to support the hand and prevent fatigue, while affording a thin enough profile for blazing fretwork. Speaking of fretwork, Fano does an impeccable job dressing and polishing their frets and this one is no exception. The string action sits very easily at a hair over 4/64” on the low E at the 12th fret and a hair over 3/64” on the high E, without any buzz. The body is nicely contoured front and back to round out a superbly-comfortable playing experience.
