What Does Josh Think?
Thick, rich and woody with just enough presence in the top end. The combination of Korina body and Mahogany set neck gives you loads of warmth but a subtle “cut” on the top that makes sure you don’t get buried in the mix. We like to say that the Lollar Firebird pickups have the open EQ curve of a single coil but with the gut-punching attack of a humbucker. Put it all together and you’ve got a guitar that does big warm clean tones just as well as it delivers searing lead lines.
The bridge position on this guitar is one of my favorite bridge position sounds I’ve heard in a long time. It’s thick and meaty but incredibly tight and distinct at the same time. It has a punchy, very desirable compression on Fender-style amps and plays equally well when you switch over to a Marshall or higher-gain amplifier. You can chug and riff to your heart’s content and hear every nuance of your low E and A strings, even if detuned.
The neck pickup is buttery but articulate. The bottom is thick and punchy and the top end has a well-measured bite and snap on tap when you dig in for it. Paired with the bridge pickup, you get bell-like tones that cut through a mix. This position will make your Fender amps sound AC30-ish with a nice chime and a bit of grit when pushed.
Coil splitting the neck pickup gives you incredible Hendrix tones, specifically of the Foxy Lady variety. We consistently find that the characteristics of Lollar’s Firebird pickups lend to an extremely strong coil split. In this particular guitar, this is further compounded by the warmth of the mahogany neck to give you single-coil tones that lack for nothing. Instead of bright and sterile, you get richness and a nice natural compression.
The bridge position coil split is big and spanky, with more body than you would get out of a Strat bridge position and less twang than a Tele. Playing with the two combinations of splits in the middle position unleash even more versatility. Running the neck coil split and the bridge full humbucker delivers a unique blend of snap and snarl. Playing the neck in humbucker mode and the bridge coil split gives you multi-tracked tones in a single pass, also perfect for filling space in a live setting.
How Does It Play?
The neck on this one feels vintage Gibson all the way. It is a late 50’s round C profile in the realm of Gibson’s recent version of a ’59 roundback. The back feels incredible the way Fano has distressed it naturally at the shoulders, giving you a headstart on years of breaking it in just right. It also sets up nicely without buzz, just as you would expect.
