Moonshine isn’t the only thing to come from the hills of North Carolina. The state has been the birthplace of banjo great Earl Scruggs and the stomping grounds of flat top picker Doc Watson. But more recently, the electrified sounds of Elliott guitars and amplifiers have been heard rolling in the valleys and roaring on stages across the nation. From an unassuming shop in Hiddenite, NC, this 190-proof team is crafting some of the most intoxicating small-batch guitar flavors in the industry.
This is one of the very first couple of 357’s in a solid Vanilla Shake, featuring new control knobs and a spectacular new tortoiseshell pickguard.
Pickups
Low output, big tone. The attack of the Elliott Gold Foils is round and warm, but the articulation is real. That kind of clarity is the hallmark of a low output pickup, but the magic is in how thick and rich these are at the same time. This is the kind of thing Elliott guitars are known for, and an important ingredient is the pickups Adam Childers is hand-winding for these beauties. The bottom is big and juicy, the mids are sumptuous, and the organic top end is a fresh zest that ties all the flavors together. Oh, and these pickups are super quiet when it comes to unwanted hum and interference too.
Neck
For those who love a Mustang body but not the short scale length, this is a guitar that will keep up with the big boys. The Maple neck features a full 25.5” scale length and a mid-‘60s fast C profile. Andy Elliott favors flatsawn over quartersawn for its broader frequency response and reinforces the neck with two graphite rods to make sure it doesn’t move no matter how hard your rock or how far you travel. It is finished in a smooth satin nitro (gloss on headstock) and dressed up on the side with Elliott’s unique red-toned dot inlays, easily visible under stage lights or lack thereof. It is topped with an Indian Rosewood fingerboard that is planed under tension for a perfectly straight end result.
Bridge
The Elliott hardtail bridge on this guitar is a tone beast! The brass saddles help lend the guitar a warm, rich midrange. No lack of clarity or definition though! Just great attack and beautiful sustain thanks to the large surface-to-surface area of the bridge to the guitar.
How Does It Play?
4/64” all the way across at the 12th fret, without any buzz. These guitars are dialed in thoroughly by Andy Elliott and seem to be bulletproof to the normal affects of shipping and variations in climate. Of course, we check thoroughly and ensure everything is in tip-top shape from frets to electronics.
The SKB hardshell case is included and will protect your guitar faithfully. The rubber cushion grip handle is super comfy and the latches are TSA-approved.
