Moonshine and music have long been staples of the hills of North Carolina. The state was the birthplace of banjo great Earl Scruggs and the stomping grounds of flat top picker Doc Watson. But more recently, the electrified sounds of Elliott guitars and amplifiers have been heard rolling in the valleys and roaring on stages across the nation. From an unassuming shop in Hiddenite, NC, this 190-proof team is crafting some of the most intoxicating small-batch guitar flavors in the industry.

What Do We Think?

The Elliott Thumper features a modified single-channel 5e3 Tweed front end paired with hefty US-made power and output transformers. Through a 12” Celestion Alnico Gold speaker, that means the amp has incredible touch dynamics, complex harmonic content and a full-bodied low end. It is incredibly easy to plug in and immediately dial in a superb neutral tone. We like to start with the volume around 3 and the tone at 6 (keep in mind the knobs go from 1 to 12). This lets the true color of any guitar shine through with an even and extensive frequency response.

With humbuckers, breakup starts around 4 or 5 on the volume knob. Dialing up from there really gets the amp throbbing in the low end, with an instinctual give-and-take between the attack of the guitar and the compression of the amp. The high end stays crisp and clear, so the guitar never loses its cut in the mix even as you push the amp into increasingly-rich harmonic saturation. The entire sweep of the volume knob is utilized here.

Pushing the tone knob up from six dials in the breakup quicker without the added compression in the low end. The volume and tone knobs are extremely interactive in this circuit, so one of our favorite settings with humbuckers is to bring the volume halfway up and the tone to about 8. Here you can really milk the amp with your guitar’s volume knob, cleaning up the neck pickup for a transparent attack while maintaining a lush low end. All pickup positions play nicely, and a bridge pickup with the guitar volume fully up will push through a dense band mix without issue. With vintage output single coils, you’re likely to find this spot around 9 or 10 on the amp volume while leaving the tone knob right in the same place.

One of the things we enjoy the most about this amp is that you don’t have to work the tone knob to find that spot where it works for one guitar, and then find another spot for another guitar. The beauty and simplicity of this type of tone stack is that it lets any good guitar do its job. Even switching from single coils to humbuckers, you’ll find the amp to be extremely accommodating and that the tone knob can really be used in conjunction with the volume for dialing in the amount of grit, saturation or warmth you want in your signal. And all at 32lb, this amp is proof that great things can come in little packages.
