What Do We Think?

This is one smooth playing experience, from the super-light 6lb 3oz weight to the PLEK’d neck to the effortless jangle of the TV Jones PowerTron pickups. Less is often more when playing this guitar. It does not require a heavy attack to come to life, but it will respond kindly when you do want to dig in. The PowerTron Plus in the bridge position in particular has that extra get-up-and-go to deliver the goods through an overdriven amp or good drive pedal. The guitar will shine and sit nicely on top of a mix not by merit of unwanted harshness or brightness, but rather by means of its liveliness and articulation.

The tones are very bell-like through a clean amp in all positions, with an immensely satisfying level of chime available in the middle position. The neck pickup has a warm but nuanced midrange and a beautiful transparency on the top. The guitar is very loud unplugged, with a big acoustic shimmer that translates just as well when plugged in. Clean chords are large and three-dimensional. If you like the feel of a humbucker but are looking for a more open tonality with less honkiness and more shimmer, the TV Jones PowerTrons are going to become fast friends.

In the off-the-cuff pronouncement of our tech as we sit here listening and writing up the description: “Man, this thing just sounds so good.” No lie.

How Does It Play?

This guitar fits really nicely in your lap with a perfectly-proportioned waist. The neck profile is a comfortable round C with healthy shoulders, measuring .88” at the 1st fret and .93” at the 12th. The string action measures just a hair over 4/64” on the low E at the 12th fret and well under 4/64” on the high E, without any buzz. Every part of this guitar feels effortless, responsive and natural.
