Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. Models can be built with either a maple or rosewood fretboard to meet the needs of a variety of players. If this isn’t the exact Fano you are looking for, contact us to spec one out precisely to your liking!
What Do We Think?
Nice and crisp, with beautiful response to the tone knob. The Mini Broiler pickups are constructed with oversized Alnico 5 pole pieces hidden beneath the cover and sound like a cross between a single coil and a Firebird pickup. They deliver serious chime and jangle with a present low end and a moderate midrange scoop. Rolling back the tone gives you the effect of tapering off the high end without clouding the articulation in the midrange. In fact, you can roll it right down to around 3 before getting muddy, and the taper is smooth everywhere in between.
While not lacking in top end, the neck position reminds us of a ‘50s Strat, with a punchy low end and a welcome touch of spongey compression. It sounds big and beautiful in front of a clean amp, but also maintains great string definition as you move into blues territory. The middle position exudes a nice spank as the two pickup positions contribute their unique tonal signatures. The bridge position handles overdrive well, with a much more powerful attack and body than the bridge position of the Strat alluded to above.
The 24.75” scale length is incredibly easy to play and the location of the bridge keeps the fretting hand close to the body even when playing the first fret positions. The German Carve also reduces the weight and makes for a guitar that is comfortably light on the shoulder. This one comes in just under 7lb!
How Does It Play?
This beauty sets up with the string action measuring a hair over 4/64” at the 12th fret on the low E and under 4/64” on the high E, really the sweet spot for a 24.75” scale guitar! The frets are beautifully dressed and polished. The round back 50’s-inspired C profile is fills out the hand nicely, with a good taper that starts moderate in the cowboy chord area and really encourages you to dig in on the upper frets. We do a thorough check and make the occasional truss rod, nut or saddle tweak to make sure the guitar plays exactly to our liking. This one sure does!
