Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. Models can be built with either a maple or rosewood fretboard to meet the needs of a variety of players. What Do We Think?
First of all, we are super excited that Fano has reintroduced the MG6 model. It provides a full 25.5” scale length take on the classic Mustang, doing away with the intonation and low string tension issues that hinder the shorter scale design. The MG6 Oltre also features a “vintage” style 6-screw Gotoh 510T tremolo with steel saddles and a smooth design that keeps the strings from making contact with the baseplate when they come up through the block and over the saddle. Strings move freely back to pitch every time and tuning stays spot on!
The TV Jones PowerTron pickups have plenty of body in the low end, with a feel reminiscent of their PAF cousins. But the top end has the sparkle and transparency of a single coil. Less honk and more shimmer, so to speak. This guitar excels at cleans and mild to moderately-overdriven tones. With its open midrange, it does equally well straight into an amp with some onboard reverb as it does plugging into a spaceship of time- and space-based effects. It maintains a nice “sting” when you turn up the heat, too. Overdriven rhythm tones stay crisp and present on the bridge pickup.
How Does It Play?
The early 60’s C neck profile leans on the slim side for comfort, with just enough shoulder and girth to comfortably support the hand. The fretwork is impeccable with highly polished frets and smooth fret ends. The neck adjusts just perfectly and the string action sits at 4/64” on the low E at the 12th fret and nearly down to 3/64” on the high E, without any buzz. Continuing with the comfort, the guitar is beautifully sculpted on the back to hug the body and has a generous arm contour to keep your picking hand relaxed.
