Like what you see? All photos (and video) are of the exact instrument you will receive.
Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. Models can be built with either a maple or rosewood fretboard to meet the needs of a variety of players. What Do We Think?
The Lollar Firebird pickups in this guitar position themselves (quite literally) to maintain clarity in front of any amp, whether plugging straight in or going through a spaceship of a pedal board. What do we mean? First of all, the location of the neck pickup is farther back than your typical neck position. This gives it a distinct tonal character, namely a snappier edge with more controlled bass frequencies and wonderful string-to-string definition. And then there’s the character of the Firebird pickups themselves. They have the low end power and punch of a full humbucker, the midrange transparency of a single-coil, and a top end that is smooth yet perfectly enunciated.
This guitar also has individual coil splits for each pickup. The Lollar Firebirds are incredibly adept in the art of coil-splitting. They do not experience the same level of volume drop that full humbucking pickups typically do when split. The tonality is also a less abrupt change, meaning all pickup settings and combinations sound musical through your rig without the need to change amp or pedal settings. And that’s eight combinations if you’re counting! A particular favorite of ours is the bridge in coil-split mode, which pairs remarkably well with the neck in humbucking mode for an enormous soundscape. In short, there’s no shortage of fantastic tones in this guitar.
The sweep of the tone knob behaves very nicely with the Firebird pickups as well, allowing you to color the top end as you desire and also giving the bridge pickup the fat midrange of a standard humbucker as you roll it back. Whether you need it to twang or to sit nice and balanced in the mix, this guitar has the options to go where you need it to go. At all turns, you’ll also find a little extra harmonic richness and sparkle that makes the guitar stand out.
By the way, the Sonic Mary finish (a translucent version of Sonic Blue) looks absolutely phenomenal! We try our hardest to capture every nuance in photos, but it’s not until you have it in your hands that you can truly appreciate the subtleties. We spec’d this one with a very light distress and it features some understated finish checking and the first few minor bumps so that you can get right to playing without worrying.
How Does It Play?
These guitars come in playing great right from Fano. The frets are beautifully dressed and polished. The early 60’s-inspired C profile is temperately slim, but with a nice amount of shoulder to support the hand and thwart fatigue. We do a thorough check and make the occasional truss rod, nut or saddle tweak to make sure the guitar plays exactly to our liking. The string action measures just 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret and even lower on the high E, without buzz.
