Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. Models can be built with either a maple or rosewood fretboard to meet the needs of a variety of players. What Does Ivey Think?
You can't spell special without “SP”, and that's exactly what could be said about this Fano SP6. This guitar features a beautiful piece of Alder that looks great peering through the 3-Tone Sunburst finish. The distress work on the finish and neck adds a nice touch both aesthetically and functionally, making it feel nicely broken in. With a Lollar P-90 in the neck and Fano's own "T" style bridge pickup, you're in for some stellar tones.
In the bridge position this guitar oozes twang and snap with ample clarity. The low end is punchy and the top end rounded off in just the right spot. Single note lead lines don’t get brittle, yet big country chords stay clear at the same time. This pickup works very well with overdrive thanks to a sweet upper midrange that drops off just before 4k.
Moving to the Lollar P-90 in the neck, there aren't enough good things to say about this pickup. In this guitar, there's plenty of harmonic richness and open top end, accompanied by the warmth you want out of a P-90. The low end is tight with a really nice stringy snap, and higher notes have a searing sizzle when you dig in with an edge-of-breakup tone dialed up. It also blends really well with the bridge pickup, offering a slightly scooped middle position that sounds incredible clean.
How Does It Play?
The late ‘50s roundback neck profile is full but accessible. Compare it to Gibson’s more recent take on a ’59 reissue. The string action measures barely over 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret and even a touch under 4/64” on the high E, without any buzz. The contoured neck heel makes the transition to the upper frets a breeze.
