Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. What Does Ivey Think?
You probably haven't played a "Junior" quite like this! With its proprietary bridge, Lollar Special T and Mini humbucker pickups, this guitar transcends multiple traditional guitar designs. The Tobacco burst looks great on this piece of alder and the natural sustain unplugged is fantastic.
The Lollar Special T in the bridge of this guitar is just mean. It is a very punchy tele pickup with a solid lower midrange and nice bump between 2-3k that gives it the cut and twang you want. It handles overdrive exceptionally well and is great for those who find vintage spec tele bridge pickups too thin for their taste. Nonetheless, there is no lack of clarity and the output balances nicely with the neck pickup.
Speaking of the neck pickup, the Lollar mini humbucker in this guitar is a real treat. Dishing out a sparkling top end and deep, punchy lows this pickup combines the best aspects of both single coil and humbucker tones in one. It has a quick Strat-like response and feel while having the noise-canceling attribute and character of a humbucker.
Blending the bridge and neck creates a middle position that has a wide frequency range with a generous mid scoop. It sounds a little more HiFi than your standard Tele middle, in a really nice way. Also, the neck position has a coil split feature which can be engaged via a push/pull pot on the volume knob. This gives you a secondary flavor for both your neck and neck/middle positions!
How Does It Play?
The late ‘50s roundback neck profile is full but accessible. Compare it to Gibson’s more recent take on a ’59 reissue. The string action on this guitar measures barely a hair over 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret and just under 4/64” on the high E, without any buzz. The contoured neck heel makes the transition to the upper frets a breeze.
