The Alt de Facto series is Fano’s top-of-the-line custom series. These are handbuilt in the USA by one luthier from start to finish so that every instrument tells a unique and cohesive story. Nitrocellulose lacquer finish on both the body and neck of course. If this isn’t exactly the guitar you are looking for, let us know what you want and we’ll get you the best price on your custom build.
What Do We Think?
The combination of options contained by this guitar is truly unique. A 24.75” scale length, Tele bridge, Firebird neck pickup, bass cut and tone knobs… all in a semi-hollow construction. The tones are twangy and jangly, yet round and resonant.
The Lollar Firebird in the neck and Vintage T in the bridge complement each other well, both having a moderate output along with great clarity. They have a bunch of useable sounds when paired with the tone and bass cut knobs, and are very responsive to both. Then again, don’t be afraid to run all the knobs wide open!
The bridge position has just about all you could want out of a good tele bridge sound. It’s twangy and clear with just the right amount of midrange to give it body. But there’s a natural airiness and sweetness from the semi-hollow body that prevents things from ever sounding shrill or ice picky.
The neck position is warm but simultaneously clear and brilliant. Try rolling back the bass cut a bit to make that Firebird deliver one of the clearest neck position sounds you’ll ever find. And when tapering the highs with the tone knob you can get some really smooth lead tones as well. And the middle position delivers Mark Knopfler’s “Sultans of Swing” with just a little less quack.
How Does It Play?
This guitar sports a “late 50s roundback” neck profile much akin to the latest iteration of Gibson’s ’59 reissue. Nice and full but not full-on baseball bat. It measures around .860” at the first fret and grows to a nice .970” at the 12th. The neck sets up straight and low, with string action hovering right around 4/64” at the 12th fret. The back of the neck is sanded down for instant comfort.
