What Do We Think?
Mahogany body, Figured Maple top, Tele half bridge, and semi-hollow construction with a Bigsby… talk about a combo! The tonal variables of this guitar deliver exceptional tones as the sum of its parts. On the bridge pickup the midrange is full and well EQ'd, with a nice chirp to the higher register as well as a tight low end. The Tele half bridge and Bigsby contribute some extra-sweet high end definition that compliments the tone woods very nicely.
In all three pickup positions this guitar has a richness that will run with the best of the semi-hollowbody options out there, providing sweet and smooth lead lines alongside a big, round foundation for rhythm work. Although we don't find this guitar to be muddy, the Bass Cut knob is still a really nice feature that can be used to “focus” or tailor the low end. Think crisp Motown-inspired licks, even out of the neck pickup.
The cosmetics of this guitar set the bar just as high as its tonal footprint. Starting with Gretsch inspirations… the Faded Cherry on maple takes on a very Gretsch-like orange… and adding some flair of its own such as natural maple binding and matching maple pickup rings, this guitar walks a path that is entirely its own.
How Does It Play?
This beauty plays exceptionally low without any fretbuzz. The string action is only a hair above 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret, and a hair above 3/64” on the high E. The late ‘50s round back neck profile will fill out the hand nicely all night long without any discomfort.
