Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. Models can be built with either a maple or rosewood fretboard to meet the needs of a variety of players. If this isn’t the exact Fano you are looking for, contact us to spec one out precisely to your liking!
What Do We Think?
This guitar puts some shimmer into your humbucking tones! The TV Jones Classic (neck) and Classic Plus (bridge) set are still big and meaty, but the midrange is more neutral than a traditional humbucker and the top end a bit more open. The guitar is not bright by any means, but is a beautiful blend of fat and articulate.
The bridge pickup is thick and chewy, but without the nasal midrange hump. The upper strings ring through clearly on big open chords. Rolling back the tone knob delivers thick wah-like vowels that work equally well for lead and rhythm work. It can even add a fuzz factor to the tone of a distorted amp, coming across as even more saturated and rolling off the top end off without losing its diction.
The neck pickup has more transparency, almost like a Strat neck on steroids. Through a perfectly clean amp, it maintains a nice open chirp that a traditional neck ‘bucker won’t be able to give you. Through an edge-of-breakup rig, it balances a big throaty bottom with a grittier top end.
The NOS finish on this guitar will allow you to put your own wear and aging on the instrument. Fano uses a remarkably thin nitrocellulose finish that will develop natural checking and lets the pure resonance of the old-grown North American Alder body really shine. From fit to finish, this is a beautiful instrument.
How Does It Play?
The string action measures barely a hair over 4/64” on the low E at the 12th fret, and even under 4/64” on the high E. There is no fretbuzz. The late 50’s round back C neck is supportive but not intimidating. It measures just .860” at the first fret and tapers to a good .970” at the 12th.
