Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. Models can be built with either a maple or rosewood fretboard to meet the needs of a variety of players. What Does Josh Think?
The vibrant 3-Tone Sunburst finish is not misleading… this guitar exudes serious energy! The neck position is chewy, but with a steely articulation to the upper strings that keeps it from ever getting muddy. Through a clean amp, the touch sensitivity is enthralling. You can conjure airy Strat-like tones with a light touch or emphasize a deep midrange with a heavier hand.
And it handles gain just as well! It does a great swampy thing through a moderately overdriven amp, and takes off with liquid sustain through a modified Plexi-style build. I’m not usually one to bond so much with the neck pickup for overdrive tones, but this one had me coming back for more.
And so will the bridge position. It rings like a bell with big upper harmonics. Starting clean, you get a crisp attack and tight bottom end that begs for a blend of country picking and percussive Motown funk. Switch to the gain channel and you’ll find the pickup has fantastic grunt down low, and singing overtones up high. We love how Fano’s P-90 keeps it together as you reach higher gain ranges.
The middle position has a haunting beauty… exceptionally clear and compliant to every pick stroke. If you are looking for an acoustic-like purity for strummed passages or needing the space to dish out neo-soul arpeggios and razor-quick clean melodies, this position is going to be your ticket.
How Does It Play?
Fano’s Late 50’s Round Back neck profile is full, but not overly chunky. This one may be shaped just a touch thinner than most at the nut, feeling almost like a ’65 Strat at the first few frets and growing gradually to more of a classic ’59 LP at the 12th. The string action measures just 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret and nearly down to 3/64” on the high E. There is no fretbuzz.
