Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. Models can be built with either a maple or rosewood fretboard to meet the needs of a variety of players. What Do We Think?
The Lollar Staple P-90 in the neck has a warm, woody tonality with a relaxed upper midrange and a blooming top end. The pickup is full but not compressed, punchy but not “hot”. It sounds huge with loads of character, but clear and pure at the same time. The Imperial humbucker in the bridge takes this guitar into traditional rock ‘n’ roll territory. It sounds powerful and punchy, with lush midrange content that pushes amps into thick breakup.
With a coil split on the bridge pickup, this guitar delivers two distinct middle position tones. With the bridge pickup in humbucking mode, the middle position exudes deep, present low end and an expressive upper register. With the bridge pickup coil split, the middle position has a wonderful snap and pop, closer to a single-coil guitar but maintaining the richness of the Staple P-90 in the mix.
We have to give a quick shoutout to Fano for their incredible distressing and oxidation of the gold top finish on this guitar. This finish has become one of our absolute favorites. The aged nickel hardware, parchment plastics and gold reflector knobs look phenomenal as well.
How Does It Play?
The setup on this guitar absolutely shreds, but without a touch of fretbuzz. The string action measures just 4/64” on the low E at the 12th fret and 3/64” on the high E. The finish is sanded off the back of the neck for a smooth, effortless feel. With a 24.75” scale length and a moderate late 50’s round C profile (ballpark Gibson’s most recent take on the ’59 neck), this guitar is poised to be an instant classic in your collection.
