Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. Models can be built with either a maple or rosewood fretboard to meet the needs of a variety of players. What Does Josh Think?
Before I even get started talking about the tone of the Lollar Imperials, let’s talk about the energy this guitar produces acoustically. This is one lively piece of alder. There is a massive shimmer emanating from the guitar on every strum.
The neck position has a delightfully crisp delivery on the upper strings and a thick, wah-like resonance on the low strings. Think “Sweet Child ‘O Mine” tone to get you started, but then imagine it with a wider EQ spread from top to bottom. Chewier lows and snappier highs. Rarely do we find a neck position with this kind of 3-dimensional character.
The bridge position has a strong but balanced midrange presence. This gives it the perfect punch for pushing an amp. From brisk edge-of-breakup to big crunch tones to soaring higher gain leads, this pickup is likely to become a staple in your overdrive arsenal.
The middle position is open and dynamic. It dishes out beautiful tones on a clean channel with a firm and controlled bottom leading up to sparkling upper register. Whether playing big open chords or leaning into more complex voicings with tightly-clustered intervals, this position gives you loads of clarity and note independence.
How Does It Play?
The PX6 neck gets nice and chunky, but it starts out moderately to make sure the cowboy position chords are a breeze to play. As you transition through the middle of the neck it grows to classic ‘59 Gibson proportions. And it is comfortable the entire way. The string action sits just over 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret, and just under on the high E. There is no fretbuzz.
