Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. Models can be built with either a maple or rosewood fretboard to meet the needs of a variety of players. What Does Josh Think?
The Lambertones Crema humbuckers are always a delight to play, and the set in this alder body PX6 is no exception. These pickups infuse nuance and clarity into the warmth and depth of your traditional humbuckers. The midrange is tighter and more refined. The top end has an extra shimmer.
Given these characteristics, we find the neck pickup to be especially usable, where some guitars come across a bit muddy. The middle strings are more open and less wooly than with a traditional neck position ‘bucker. The pickup speaks sweetly and articulately for clean tones, and that same clarity gives it a nice grind and chime through some dirt.
The bridge pickup has a pristine, vivacious quality. The top end tapers off pleasingly, but has lots of energy before doing so. With the tone knob all the way up, it dishes out crisp and punchy rhythm tones. The tone knob can be rolled back all the way to about 25% before getting muddy, giving you tons of nuance in how you want to tailor your top end. As you sweep through the range of the tone knob, you’ll also find vocal-inspired vowels in the midrange that make your lead tones absolutely sing.
How Does It Play?
This guitar sets up beautifully, with string action hovering right around 4/64” at the 12th fret across all strings… hair higher on the bass side and hair lower on the treble side. The PX6 neck profile is a nice 50’s round C that starts with a moderate depth and fills out the hand nicely as you arrive at the upper frets. For me personally, I never think “too thick” or “too thin” as I play it. It simply lends itself to the job at hand.
