What Does Josh Think?
Straightforward control setup, but loads of tones here! First let’s talk woods. The guitar weights just 7lb 6oz. It’s real easy on the shoulder, and real nice on the ears. Through spec'ing a few of these, we’ve come to discover the Korina body / mahogany neck combination is our favorite for a PX6 set neck guitar. The Korina is very vibrant, with resonant low end and a shimmering upper register. The mahogany neck adds some nice meat in the midrange without making the tone dark.
The Lollar Firebird neck and Mini Hum bridge combination has become one of our favorites also. We like to say that the Lollar Firebird has the open EQ curve of a single coil but with the punch and a little bit of the rounded attack of a humbucker. It is a very expressive, dynamic neck position. Never muddy, and 100% hum-cancelling.
The Lollar Mini Humbucker in the bridge splits the difference between a Firebird pickup and a traditional humbucker. It has less of a pronounced midrange hump than a traditional 'bucker. A little more spank and sparkle, but still plenty of girth. Just like the Firebird in the neck, it gets high marks for being expressive and responsive to pick attack as well as volume knob and tone knob positions.
The middle position is unique in its blend of the two individual pickups. You get some compression from the Mini Hum in the bridge, paired with the open sparkle of the neck position. It’s a really expansive sound, with nice power and clarity.
How Does It Play?
The neck on this one feels vintage Gibson all the way. It is a late 50’s round C profile in the realm of Gibson’s most recent reiteration of a ’59 roundback... not massive, just nice and full. The string action measures a super low 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret and 3/64” on the high E string, all without a hint of buzz.
