The Alt de Facto series is Fano’s top-of-the-line custom series. These are handbuilt in the USA by one luthier from start to finish so that every instrument tells a unique and cohesive story. Nitrocellulose lacquer body and neck of course. If this isn’t exactly the guitar you are looking for, let us know what you want and we’ll get you the best price on your custom build.
What Do We Think?
This guitar has the distinct midrange we love in mahogany. It is full and warm in the low mids, dry and airy in the upper midrange. This allows the guitar to really thump without getting muddy. The maple neck is a key ingredient as well. The bottom end can chug, but you maintain a tight handle on your articulation and delivery nonetheless. The top end is present but nicely tapered.
Of course, we do happen to also love the pickup set that is loaded in this guitar. Lollar Imperials sit very nicely for a variety of styles and tones. If you’re going for full-on death metal, then perhaps look elsewhere. But for a PAF-styled pickup that can deliver sweet clean tones and keep up with some pretty raucous amp overdrives, look no further. They feature Alnico 2 magnets in the neck and degaussed Alnico 5 magnets in the bridge. Both pickups are potted to reduce squeal, but without killing the top end.
In fact, the Mastery Vibrato adds its own dimension of sparkle to the top end. The bridge position in particular comes across as both percussive and sweet. The neck position is given a little extra zing through the midrange that makes big chords ring out with perfect clarity. And if you plan on making good use of the vibrato, you’ll definitely appreciate the smoothness of the Mastery along with the pop-in tremolo arm. The arm can be rotated easily out of the way, or left in playing position for easy access at any time.
How Does It Play?
The string action measures just 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret, and even lower on the high E. There is no fretbuzz. The PX6 neck profile is a 50’s round C. It starts with a moderate depth that won’t necessarily make you think “chunky,” but fills out the hand nicely as you progress to the upper frets. And the back of the neck is sanded smooth for effortless transitions up and down the length of the fretboard.
