How Does Josh Think?
This is a superbly-balanced guitar, from fit to tone. First of all, no deck dive. The strap button positions on the PX6 resolve that issue once and for all. And the non-reverse styled body sits neatly in the lap while giving extended upper fret access (also assisted by a generously contoured neck heel).
Acoustically the sum of maple neck, alder body and tune-o-matic bridge is lively and resonant. Plugged in, the Lollar Firebird (neck) and mini humbucker (bridge) really have the freedom to shine. The neck position could be likened to a bigger, bolder Strat. The sting is there as you dig in, and the midrange is complex yet slightly-scooped and never muddy. Like a single coil, it tracks effortlessly with your dynamic range as a player. But it is fully hum-cancelling.
The bridge position has a slight… but very welcome… vintage honk in the midrange. It can snarl with the gain turned up, but performs just as strongly through an edge-of-breakup rig with perfect cut and poise. For a just touch of twang, leave the tone knob all the way up. To cop the sound a full size humbucker, roll it back to maybe 7. Everything in between (and under) sounds just phenomenal as well.
The middle position is more hi-fi and superbly articulate. It doesn’t compress much under the fingers, giving you a strong sounding board for vast chords and crisp arpeggios. The bottom end is firm and resounding, the top end round and extended, and the midrange tucks neatly in between with good punch and presence.
How Does It Play?
The late ‘50s roundback neck profile is full but accessible. Compare it to Gibson’s more recent take on a ’59 reissue. The contoured neck heel makes the transition to the upper frets a breeze.
