What Do We Think?
This guitar is the perfect mate to your Fender and D-Style amps. True to its appearance, it sits ready to take over territory commonly tackled with a Blackguard Tele, but with a bit of a souped-up take on those tones.
The Lollar Firebird pickups in the neck and bridge position sound like a Tele on steroids. They have the open and crisp EQ curve of a single coil but a bit of the roundness and compression of a humbucker. More output than a single coil and they do indeed buck the hum just like a traditional humbucker.
The middle control knob rolls the middle pickup in and out of the signal. You can blend it in or even solo it by cutting the volume for the neck/middle. The Lollar Broiler nails those swampy Goldfoil-like tones. It sounds phenomenal with a slide. Crank a bit of gain and this pickup really comes to life.
And of course, this lets you dial in those “in-between” tones as well. Compared to a Strat, these combinations of neck/middle and bridge/middle have a warmer, more powerful low end but still have all that perfect snap and quack up top. You can also have all three pickups running at the same time, serving up the quality of all three pickups in equal proportion.
Lastly, you have a coil split on all pickups! This is activated by a push/pull pot on the volume knob. So there’s another whole layer of tones to experiment with! You can get real spanky cleans here, whether favoring the bridge pickup for true Tele twang or mixing the middle pickup in for more of the vintage Strat thing.
How Does It Play?
The string action on this beauty measures just 4/64” on the low E at the 12th fret, and 3/64” on the high E. No fretbuzz. The neck profile is a nice 50’s round C, full and meaty but not overwhelmingly chunky. The neck is tung-oiled smooth and fast on the back where the finish is removed and just further promotes an instant bond to the instrument.
