What Does Josh Think?
Any time we receive a PX6 with a mahogany body, we’re fans. The warmth and powerhouse resonance feels so natural in a build of this body shape. And Lollar’s P-90s are just the tool to do the guitar justice. The neck P-90 serves up a dish that is deep and woody, with a bit of scooped vowel in the upper midrange for desert. Let’s just say the 12th position is blues heaven.
The bridge position has a sweet airiness and less nasal bite than you might expect out of a bridge P-90. The dry tone of the mahogany perfectly supports the contribution of the Bigsby hardware, which is best described as a little presence bump in the top end. This position can handle gain with no problem, but you’re likely to find yourself spending more time than expected relishing in the crisp, full clean tones it is dying to produce.
The middle position has a piano-like attack, rounded more than a single coil but reminiscent of one in its clarity and expression. It’s tough to choose a favorite position, but thankfully you don’t have to. This guitar is superbly-balanced across all three positions of the toggle switch, with no drops or bumps in volume to keep you from desiring one as much as the other.
How Does It Play?
The late ‘50s roundback neck profile is full but accessible. It starts pretty moderate frets one through five and starts to pick up a truly chunky feel around the 7th fret and up. The finish on the back is sanded down and Tung-oiled for a perfectly smooth, no-stick feel. The string action measures barely a hair over 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret and measures under 4/64” on the high E. There is no fretbuzz.
