What Do We Think?
Lollar Novel 90 and Imperial humbucker… there is not a weak position on this guitar, yet each is significantly different from the others and allows you to cover a huge swath of tones and textures.
On the Novel 90, we don’t think we can do any better than Premier Guitar’s writeup in their Humbucker-Size P-90 Review Roundup: “They’re bold pickups with a sophisticated sound. Fatter in the low-mids than most of their rivals, they emphasize warmth and complexity over snappy attack. They’re not exactly dark sounding, but they’ve got an old, vintage vibe—as if the magnets have softened over time. Lollar P-90s sound smooth and smoky in the best possible way (think well-aged whiskey).”
In the bridge position of this guitar, the Lollar Imperial delivers tones that are thick and chunky yet perfectly distinct. The midrange hits hard, while the upper frequencies breathe nicely and allow for the perfect presence on top. The middle position combines the remarkably robust bottom of the Novel 90 with the rich midrange of the Imperial.
The flame maple top is highly 3-dimensional under the light. It ripples intensely as you move it, a gorgeous sight to see. And we custom spec’d this one with no pickguard so you can enjoy the figure on the entire top.
How Does It Play?
The string action measures barely a hair over 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret, and a tad under on the high E. The frets are dressed perfectly and there is no fretbuzz. The late 50’s Round Back C profile is very much akin to the latest iteration of Gibson’s ’59 reissue profile, chunky but not baseball bat. Supportive but still fast when you want it to be.
