Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. Models can be built with either a maple or rosewood fretboard to meet the needs of a variety of players. What Does Josh Think?
Fano’s P-90 pickups thrive in this guitar. With its Mustang-inspired body (but larger), its full 25.5” scale length and a Gotoh 510 Strat trem, it pulls the best parts from multiple axes and puts them right under your fingertips.
The bridge position through a clean amp sounds exactly like you wish a Strat bridge would sound. Tight, but big and punchy. And this pickup loves to be cranked up. It will take you into EVH terrain through a gained-up amp, delivering precise attack over a powerful lower midrange. Turn back the tone knob just a touch to really settle into that thick, screaming humbucker territory.
The neck position is a little more relaxed. It has a touch of cushion on bottom, but also retains remarkable composure and presence on the high strings. Hence, it is able to be both warm and articulate. It gives you a nice presence up top that a humbucker in the neck wouldn’t be able to deliver.
The middle position is more bell-like and punchy in its delivery. The bottom is firm and powerful. The middle register is clear and the highs can be anything from sparkly to spanky depending on your attack.
By the way, our apologies for not photographing the tremolo arm on the guitar. The Gotoh 510 is a really superb tremolo. Specifically, this is the 510T-SF2 model with traditional steel saddles and Gotoh’s FST mechanism which prevents the strings from binding on the baseplate as they exit the block. Tuning returns perfectly to pitch after use. And the tremolo arm has a improved thread design and an adjustable collet to take out the play that plagues traditional S-Style trems.
How Does It Play?
The neck profile is a moderate “early 60’s” C that leaves enough on the shoulder to support the hand and prevent fatigue, while affording a thin enough profile for blazing fretwork. Generous body contours and a heel contour make this guitar especially easy to navigate. The string action measures right around 4/64” at the 12th fret without a hint of buzz.
