Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. Models can be built with either a maple or rosewood fretboard to meet the needs of a variety of players. If this isn’t the exact Fano you are looking for, contact us to spec one out precisely to your liking!
What Do We Think?
This guitar sits particularly well-balanced in the tonal spectrum. Fano’s P-90 pickups are voiced just a bit darker than many other brands of P-90 and sit very nicely in a maple-neck, alder-body build. In the neck position you will find loads of warmth melded with that signature P-90 “edge.” There is inherent articulation and snap that you just won’t find in a humbucker.
The middle position yields an effervescent sparkle. Every nuance of the pick and fingers is beautifully represented. Both the bass and treble registers feel “extended” for a wide-range sound that brings your chords and arpeggios to life.
The bridge position is bold and precise, but not bright. In fact, it has a rich lower register and a smooth midrange that absolutely sings with some gain. You’ll appreciate the plush voicing of the pickup just as much through a clean amp. The top end is present and accounted for, but tapers off naturally so you don’t have to work at the EQ on your amp.
The Gotoh 510T bridge is a superb piece of hardware that mixes vintage strat design with modern improvements. The tremolo arm features threading on the inside AND features an adjustable collar to make sure it is always snug and responsive. This unit will even do some good dive-bombs with ease.
How Does It Play?
The early 60’s-inspired C profile is temperately slim, but with a nice amount of shoulder to support the hand and thwart fatigue. The back of the neck is sanded down smooth, ideal for players who find their hand gets sticky on the neck after playing for a while. The contoured neck heel makes those upper-fret transitions smooth and effortless. We do a thorough check and make the occasional truss rod, nut or saddle tweak to make sure the guitar plays exactly to our liking. The string action on this one measures just a hair over 4/64” at the 12th fret on the low E string and under 4/64” on the high E, without any fretbuzz.
