Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. Models can be built with either a maple or rosewood fretboard to meet the needs of a variety of players. What Does Ivey Think?
There's something about an offset Sonic Blue guitar with parchment pickguard that just puts you back into the early 60's Southern California surf scene (even if you weren't born yet, just watch Endless Summer and you'll get it). While it definitely offers some of those snappy tones reminiscent of classic Surf music, this Fano MG6 is a quite versatile and more modern take on its predecessors.
The Fano P90s in this guitar sound great in conjunction with the Gotoh 510 vintage tremolo and maple fretboard. In the bridge position you have a fairly balanced EQ with a slight dip in the lower mids. You get plenty of body and a nicely-tailored upper midrange. The top end tapers off past 4k to cut down the potentially harsh upper frequencies. Playing through a JCM800 you get some awesome bite for power chords and a cutting stringiness to lower position riffs.
In the neck you can get some really juicy lead tones. Through the same gain setting on the 800 it's like if Tom Morello played the blues. Tight and percussive with a hair of SRV's overdriven tones. When played through a clean amp, it has a blooming lower midrange that perfectly supports a very musical sizzle in the higher registers.
The Gotoh 510 is a really superb tremolo. Specifically, this is the 510T-SF2 model with traditional steel saddles and Gotoh’s FST mechanism which prevents the strings from binding on the baseplate as they exit the block. Tuning returns perfectly to pitch after use. And the tremolo arm has an improved thread design and an adjustable collet to take out the play that plagues traditional S-Style trems.
How Does It Play?
The neck profile is a moderate “early 60’s” C measuring approximately .830” at the first fret and .920” at the 12th. Generous body contours and a heel contour make this guitar especially easy to navigate. We have the string action set up barely a hair over 4/64” on the low E at the 12th fret and a tad under on the high E, without fretbuzz.
