Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. Models can be built with either a maple or rosewood fretboard to meet the needs of a variety of players. What Do We Think?
This Fano MG6 is an incredibly versatile guitar that combines a Gotoh 510 vintage-style trem, Lollar P-90 standard wind pickups, and flawless fretwork. Finished in a Shoreline Gold nitro finish, the guys at Fano did a great job distressing this guitar so that it feels like an old friend from the first day that you pick it up.
The Lollar P-90 in the bridge position is like a really good cup of coffee—complex but not overwhelming. You’ll find new flavor notes rising subtly to the surface the longer you savor it. Upon holding out some big chords and using the trem arm to just add a little vibe, there's a beautiful blend of a rich midrange accompanied by an invigorating top end that's tamed right before becoming bright.
On a clean amp with some warbly chorus you can easily achieve the tone on the opening track of Turnover’s "Peripheral Vision." But this guitar loves dirt, too. Add some overdrive and you can just as easily roar, with plenty of bite to fill out heavier riffs.
The neck pickup is smooth as butter. It's clear and warm all at the same time, with a very pleasing scoop in the mids around 1k. There is a low-end compression that feels really nice and nuanced, exhibiting Strat-y tendencies but with more body and less of an aggressive attack. With a little bit of dirt through an AC30 you can get a tone similar to that of "Mr.Brightside" by the Killers, with perhaps even a little more top-end clarity than the recording until you roll the tone knob down a smidge.
The Gotoh 510 is a really superb tremolo. Specifically, this is the 510T-SF2 model with traditional steel saddles and Gotoh’s FST mechanism which prevents the strings from binding on the baseplate as they exit the block. Tuning returns perfectly to pitch after use. And the tremolo arm has an improved thread design and an adjustable collet to take out the play that plagues traditional S-Style trems.
How Does It Play?
The string action is nice and low without buzz, measuring in just a smidge over 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th and a smidge under on the high E. The neck is a comfortable medium C profile. Generous body contours and a heel contour make the MG6 especially easy to navigate.
