Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. Models can be built with either a maple or rosewood fretboard to meet the needs of a variety of players. What Do We Think?
When describing the Lollar Novel 90, we don’t think we can do any better than Premier Guitar’s writeup in their Humbucker-Size P-90 Review Roundup:
“They’re bold pickups with a sophisticated sound. Fatter in the low-mids than most of their rivals, they emphasize warmth and complexity over snappy attack. They’re not exactly dark sounding, but they’ve got an old, vintage vibe—as if the magnets have softened over time. Lollar P-90s sound smooth and smoky in the best possible way (think well-aged whiskey).”
We find the low end is beautiful on clean tones but this pickup also handles gain with ease. Slide tones on the neck pickup are fantastic, rich and complex with an even dynamic response. It also responds well to both finger picking and strumming, maintaining balance and composure across multiple styles.
The bridge position has a more nuanced midrange than a traditional P-90, a little more open and a little less snarl. You can coax out a Tele-esque twang with your amp’s cleans set right, but it inherently has a bit more meat. Rolling the tone knob back to halfway gives you a very convincing take on a humbucker. And it retains the sparkle in the top end just like the best PAF’s.
Speaking of sparkle, the middle position has it in spades. We’d even go so far as to say it’s spanky. The bottom end is extremely tight and snappy. The midrange is present and balanced; the highs are quick and brilliant. It sounds like single coils on steroids, perfectly hum-cancelling and just as sweet or as bold you want to make it.
How Does It Play?
These guitars come in playing great right from Fano and sport some of the most magnificently-polished frets you’ll ever run across. The early 60’s-inspired C profile is temperately slim, but with a nice amount of shoulder to support the hand and thwart fatigue. The string action hovers right around 4/64” at the 12th fret without a hint of fretbuzz.
