Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. Models can be built with either a maple or rosewood fretboard to meet the needs of a variety of players. What Do We Think?
This MG6 Oltre is a straight-forward, rocking build. The MG6 model features a full 25.5” scale length on a Mustang-inspired body for a bigger, bolder take on the classic. This one features a pair of Fano’s own humbucking pickups.
The neck position is warm and smokey with a round, smooth top end. The bridge position sounds big and full on clean tones and absolutely grinds with some overdrive, revealing ample bottom end to support your all your riffing and single note lead lines. The middle position gives you a pleasing sparkle that highlights each chord tone and can even dish out snappy, funky tones when called upon.
The Gotoh 510T tremolo is a superb piece of hardware. This one features a solid steel block and steel saddles, giving the guitar some wonderful piano-like attack and sustain. The tremolo arm twists in AND features an adjustable collar to make sure it is always snug and responsive. This unit will even do some good dive-bombs with ease.
The guitar is decked out in 4-ply tortoise pickguard on a Vintage Cream medium distress finish. Clay dots on the fretboard complete the vintage look, and the back of the neck is sanded down nice and smooth for that wonderfully broken-in feel.
How Does It Play?
The neck profile is a moderate “early 60’s” C that leaves enough on the shoulder to support the hand and prevent fatigue, while affording a thin enough profile for blazing fretwork. Fano does an impeccable job dressing and polishing their frets and this one is no exception. The string meaures just 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret and even lower on the high E, without any buzz. The body is nicely contoured front and back to round out a superbly-comfortable playing experience.
