Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. Models can be built with either a maple or rosewood fretboard to meet the needs of a variety of players. If this isn’t the exact Fano you are looking for, contact us to spec one out precisely to your liking!
What Do We Think?
This is our first venture into the Fralin Unbuckers and we have to say, they live up to the hype! The two coils of the pickup are intentionally wound unbalanced, so that the stronger coil is the one that is active when split. You don’t experience the same volume drop you would when splitting a traditional humbucker, and the single-coil tones maintain a warm and organic body to them.
These are also humbuckers that do cleans with more “air” and a more relaxed midrange than their cousins. Whether you choose to run with the humbucking tones or switch to the single-coil options, you’ll find some extra articulation and sweetness in the mixture. Overdriven tones are thick and yet chimey at the same time.
The bridge pickup is very reminiscent of a P90 in tonality when in humbucking mode, and when split is a good Strat bridge sound with only a touch of volume drop. The middle position is extremely three dimensional and open, with a very wide frequency response. Splitting either the neck or the bridge pickup in this position yields a variety of additional tonal options, from tightening up the bottom end to scooping the midrange.
But the neck pickup may just be our favorite. For folks who have had trouble jiving with a neck position humbucker before, this one is very likely the cure for your distaste. When split, the pickup has a nice spongy scoop à la Stevie Ray neck tones, warm and juicy with a sweet top end. When switched back to humbucker mode you gain a smokier, thicker midrange without losing the clarity of the pickup.
How Does It Play?
The action on this guitar sets up superbly low without any fretbuzz. It measures just 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret and splits the difference between 3/64” and 4/64” on the high E. The back of the neck is sanded smooth and fast, and the profile is a moderate C that is fairly sleek but sports supportive shoulders.
