Nitrocellulose lacquer body and neck of course. If this isn’t exactly the guitar you are looking for, let us know what you want and we’ll get you the best price on your custom build.
What Do We Think?
Sporting one of our favorite Fano Finishes, this Surf Mary MG6 is really a standout guitar. We like what the Bigsby adds, not just as a trem, but also the top end chime we find it contributes to the tonal equation.
The standard wind Lollar P-90 in the bridge is a well-balanced medium output pickup that works great clean or with overdrive. It has plenty of bite and a full midrange punch. But it’s not only suited to rock ‘n’ roll. The pure, straightforward delivery lends to beautifully haunting clean tones when you engage a splash of reverb via amp or pedal.
The Lollar OmniTron P-90 in the neck position is wound specially for Fano and utilizes Alnico pole magnets, sharing certain build and tonal characteristics with a single coil pickup. This makes the pickup a little bit more open through the midrange than a traditional P-90, highlighting a warm low end and shimmering upper register.
While the Bigsby adds shimmer to the neck and bridge positions, it also adds punch and boldness to the middle position. Notes are round but a little “steely,” perhaps akin to the middle position on a Telecaster but beefier.
How Does It Play?
The MG6 features a full 25.5” scale length with an early 60’s C neck profile. Not quite as thin as a Fender Modern C as a frame of reference; a little more supportive while maintaining a slim feel. The fretwork is impeccable with highly polished frets and smooth fret ends. The string action measures just a hair over 4/64” on low E string at the 12th fret, and right at 4/64” on the high E. Completely free of fretbuzz.
