Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. Models can be built with either a maple or rosewood fretboard to meet the needs of a variety of players. What Do We Think?
Every rose has its thorn, literally. This Rose Gold JM6 is outfitted with a set of Suhr Thornbuckers that absolutely rip. This is one of the first JM6’s we've seen in this color and we're really digging it.
The Thornbucker Plus in the bridge complements this guitar very well. Being a hot-rodded PAF style pickup, it does a great job of offering meaty overdriven tones without sacrificing note clarity or a tight low end. When played clean it has a little bit of Tele twang to it and can push an amp just by digging in. The midrange feels dialed in and right at home when plugged into an overdriven Plexi; crisp, yet think and soaring.
This pickup also coil splits really well! It has plenty of body and very little volume loss compared to what you would normally find with a coil split. Individual push/pull pots on the volume and tone knobs give you the ability to coil split each pickup separately, or together.
Moving to the neck position, there are also really nice tones to be had here. It's warm and sweet, with just the right amount of compression to give it an energetic bounce. A bit of overdrive will really have it singing, with a clarity maintained in the top end that allows each note to cut and each pick stroke to be present. And just like the bridge pickup, it coil splits exceptionally well.
How Does It Play?
We have the string action at exactly 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret, and even a touch lower on the high E. There is no fretbuzz anywhere on the neck, and the early ‘60s-inspired C profile is fast but supportive. The contoured neck heel and deep cutaway provide a flawlessly smooth transition to the upper frets.
