Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. Models can be built with either a maple or rosewood fretboard to meet the needs of a variety of players. What Do We Think?
If you dig a humbucker in the bridge but have always found a ‘bucker in the neck to be a little muddy or too far of a jump from your bridge tone, this is the guitar for you!
The Lollar Firebird in the neck position has the punch (and hum-cancelling) of a traditional humbucker yet has the sweet, open EQ curve of a single coil. The low end is powerful and tight, the midrange is transparent and responsive, and the top end is smooth yet perfectly enunciated. Want to go all the way to a single-coil? You can do that too! Individual coil splits for each pickup give you loads of options.
The Imperial humbucker in the bridge is thick but well-positioned in the midrange for that perfect cut in the mix. It can even be creamy with a little turn of the tone knob. Gains, cleans, you throw whatever you want at it. Here too, you have a coil split option for those snappy single-coil tones on demand.
The middle position provides a unique blend of the two pickups, with less phase cancellation apparent than with a pair of traditional humbuckers. In fact, the two pickups complement each other exceedingly well. Coil splitting the bridge while leaving the Firebird in humbucking mode gives you a Strat-on-steroids tone, just a touch compressed and oh-so-juicy.
And at the end of the day, it really all starts with the basics. This is a resonant slab of alder, rich and acoustically balanced when you give it a strum unplugged. The tune-o-matic bridge brings plenty of string resonance down into the body. This one sports a translucent Sonic Mary finish that allows you to see the grain through the color. Think Mary Kaye but with a splash of sonic blue mixed in. Topped off with a 4-ply tort pickguard.
How Does It Play?
The early 60’s C neck profile leans on the slim side for comfort, with enough shoulder and girth to comfortably support the hand. The fretwork is impeccable with highly polished frets and smooth fret ends. The neck adjusts right where it needs to be and the string action is low and fast, measuring 4/64” at the 12th fret on the low E string and even lower on the high E. The neck also feels exceptionally smooth and natural where the finish is worn away under the fretting hand. The guitar is beautifully sculpted on the back to hug the body and has a generous arm contour to keep your picking hand relaxed.
