Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. Models can be built with either a maple or rosewood fretboard to meet the needs of a variety of players. If this isn’t the exact Fano you are looking for, contact us to spec one out precisely to your liking!
What Do We Think?
This guitar delivers everything from thick, lush humbucking tones to single-coil snap, thanks to a pair of Lollar Imperial humbuckers with coil splits. In humbucking mode, the neck position is fat and warm with a measure of natural compression. It produces punchy single notes and enormous, atmospheric chord sounds. The bridge position has a good, raw slice that cuts straight down the middle for more focused and aggressive tones. The middle position is bubbly and unquenchable in its delivery of a sparkly upper register and clean, buoyant bottom end.
Individual coil splits give you access to a whole slew of additional tones. The middle position with both pickups split conjures a ‘50s maple neck Strat with all its glorious quack and bell-like low register. Drop the push/pull for the neck pickup down to humbucking mode for tones more akin to the “steely” middle position of a Tele. And the neck split on its own has wonderfully chewy tones, with a sweet edge on top and a sumptuous lower register. Set your amp to edge-of-breakup tones in this position and then flip to the bridge in full humbucking mode for instantly rocking rhythm and leads. What a ride!
Some small details worth noting: The contoured neck heel is a nice touch that makes those upper-fret transitions smooth and effortless. Speaking of smooth and effortless, the sanded-down neck delivers this in spades without any stick as your hands get moving throughout the gig. And in the cosmetics department, the pearloid pickup covers and natural maple/sonic blue headstock scheme give this guitar a surfy, truly show-stopping vibe.
How Does It Play?
Guitars come in playing great right from Fano. The frets are beautifully dressed and polished. The early ‘60s-inspired C profile is temperately slim, but with a nice amount of shoulder to support the hand and thwart fatigue. We do a thorough check and make the occasional truss rod, nut slot or saddle tweak to make sure the guitar plays exactly to our liking. The string action measures just 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret, and less on the high E. No buzz.
